Human Library

The Human Library is an international organization and movement that first started in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 2000. It aims to address people’s prejudices by helping them to talk to those they would not normally meet.

Sapphire International School provides a platform for learners to identify and challenge their own biases – conscious or unconscious, prejudices, stigma, and stereotypes and talk to people and engage in discussions they would normally find difficult to engage in. The concept of the Human Library has resulted in a better understanding of diversity to help create more inclusive and cohesive communities across cultural, religious, social, and ethnic differences.

The Human Library is very much like a regular library where people go to check out books. The only difference is that the books are all human volunteers who have opted to speak about their experiences openly to an interested audience and answer any questions they are asked. The Human Library is a place where difficult questions are expected, appreciated, and answered. It is an opportunity to focus on the ‘human side’ of information.
